'THE POWERSYSTEM AND THE OPERATOR'
- K.E. DAMODARAN NAYANAR, Rtd CE, KSEB

'...The capacity of the transmission system increases as the voltage level goes up. Thus the successive networks at 66 KV, 110 KV, 220 KV and 400 KV have nearly 4 times capacity as the preceding one. Neighbouring systems are interconnected to form the regional grid...

...A delayed trip or a reclosing operation may result in creating electrical transients sufficient to activate the generator protective system. The resulting imbalance between the load and the generation cause power swings. Power swings in turn causes more generators to go off the bars. An islanded system has a frequency rise if the generation is more and a frequency fall if the generation is less than the load. Re-synchronisation is possible only if the load and generation are reasonably matched.
